Something has been on my mind for a few days, so I decided to share. The truth hurts. Enjoy.
If you are not prepared to play by todays rules or do the things that today’s super competitive environment demands you might as well make this thing we call the music industry a hobby and get another career. The later you start the harder it will be to enter the workforce at a level that can sustain the lifestyle for your age. Could you imagine waking up and being 30 with no progress towards your perceived purpose with nothing to show for it but passion?
It is okay to be passionate about things. It is okay to have what you think is a clearly defined purpose. It is okay not to have progress at first. It is not okay to be passionate about something you see no progress in and that be your only purpose. I am not saying give up your dream, but sometimes a dream deferred can be more rewarding than achieving it when you want it.
Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream which was realized when President Barack Obama became the first African American President of The United States. Do you think that it would have felt the same or been celebrated like the world did? I have been branding artists for years and I have learned a great deal. Music means nothing without a brand. I hear great music on the internet all the time, but its easily forgettable because the person performing it is forgettable.
Ladies if your purpose is to sign a deal, you will not see any progress until you understand you either have to be sexy, over the top, have ABOVE AVERAGE skill or a combination of them all. Lets keep it real for a second. Cassie can not sing, but she is sexy as hell and she sold that one single she had. Janelle Monae is cute but not sexy, but her talent is stupid. Jasmine Sullivan can not only sing, but the girl can blow. Do you fit in into any of these categories? If not you may need to hang it up or direct more of your passion into areas that need attention.
The bottom line is, everyone is passionate about fulfilling what they think is their purpose is this life, but if you see little to no progress you may need to rethink your life before you miss out on a lot in life and wake up with no purpose, passion or progress.
This is no shade at anyone in particular, but if you feel like Im talking about you. Then I probably am. I didnt mention names out of respect, but if you feel some kind of way and dont want to fuck with me. Thats cool too. You will be in the same place this time next year and I… well soon you will understand.
